Session 3 - Different formats for information

In this session we visited the State Reference Library to look at a whole lot of different types of resources including:
The class was divided into two groups and each group examined an example from the different formats to see if they could draw some general conclusions about their characteristics in terms of arrangement, scope, authority and publication pattern

We then came back to the Polytechnic and discussed what we had discovered and looked at online versions of these resources, some of which can be explored by clicking on the hyperlinks above. We discovered that the online versions were really much easier to use but may

Session 2 - Different ways of presenting information

There are many different ways of presenting information and we discussed reports, blogs, powerpoint as some examples.

The students read a handout about report writing from a book by Mary Gosling and Elizabeth Hopgood published in 1998 by Doc Matrix in Canberra called Learn About Information but most of this session was centred around learning about and creating blogs.

Students all created their own blogs and you can view examples by clicking on the following links. Bear in mind that there has been a bit of activity on the blogs since this session which was held some weeks ago now.
We also looked at a fabulous website by Alan Levine which provides an annotated list of 50 different ways to tell a story online. You can look at the site by clicking on this link

Session 1 - Introduction

Hi Everyone
This is a blog about developing your own information literacy skills. it was originally created on teh blogsome website but unfortunately something happened and it was lost to the cybershere. So I am having another attempt at creating one.

This blog has been created for a class of library technician students who are undertaking a Certificate III in Library/Information Services in Tasmania. Here is a picture of them.

We started with a group of 16 students but after a couple of sessions decided to split into two smaller groups as this was to be a trial delivery and the students were guinea pigs.

In our first session we looked at the unit outline and the assessment tasks.

The assessment task is to write a report on a research topic that includes five citations relevant to the topic, three of which need to be elecctronic sources of information. We discussed definitions of information and examples of primary, secondary and tertiary sources of information. We saw how information literacy is related to Blooms Taxonomy

We also revised how we evaluate online resources and then students were asked to look at a video by Mike Eisenberg which provided a really good basic explanation of information literacy and Web 2.0
