Session 3 - Different formats for information

In this session we visited the State Reference Library to look at a whole lot of different types of resources including:

• Diaries
• Dictionaries
• Encyclopedias
• Handbooks and manuals
• Directories
• Almanacs and yearbooks
• Statistics
• Atlases and gazeteers

The class was divided into two groups and each group examined an example from the different formats to see if they could draw some general conclusions about their characteristics in terms of arrangement, scope, authority and publication pattern

We then came back to the Polytechnic and discussed what we had discovered and looked at online versions of these resources, some of which can be explored by clicking on the hyperlinks above. We discovered that the online versions were really much easier to use but may
